I Had No Idea How Bad It Was… Until This Happened (And What It Means for Your Strength After 50) 💪🔪

Over the weekend, my wife took our kitchen knives to Chubby’s Hardware in Pound Ridge to get them sharpened.

Back in 2013 when Joanna and I got married we received an exceptional set of knives as a wedding gift from clients of mine.

We talked about getting them sharpened a handful of times over the past few years, we just never checked it off the to do list.

Honestly? I didn’t think our knives were that dull.

But that moment on Saturday afternoon, while prepping lunch for the family, I  sliced into an orange with  a freshly sharpened knife… I was shocked. 🍅🔪.

Cheff’s Kiss! Like a hot knife through butter.

I had no idea how bad dull our knives were until I experienced how good they could be.

It made me wonder—how often do we go through life not realizing what we’ve lost… until we feel the difference?

That’s exactly what happened to Nancy.

Nancy’s Wake-Up Call: The Hike That Changed Everything 🚶‍♀️🏔️

Nancy had always been active in her younger years, but over time, life got busy.

She wasn’t working out. She wasn’t thinking much about her fitness.

Then, last fall, after months of planning a lifetime trip with her family to Greece, they went on a hike together at the Sameria Gorge in Crete.

In the past, Nancy and fam took lots of hikes.

Only this time, everything was different.

🚶‍♀️ She was out of breath almost immediately.

😣 Her legs burned, and she had to stop over and over.
😞 She felt embarrassed, struggling to keep up withher kids

Nancy proclaimed “It was one of the worst physical experiences of my life.” and

“I was appalled at how out of shape she was.”

That’s when it hit her—she had no idea how much strength and stamina she had lost.

Her big realization was that she could no longer say “worked too hard, was too tired, or didn’t have time.

Just like my dull knives, she didn’t realize how bad it had gotten… until she was faced with the reality of it.

And it scared her.

That was the moment she decided something had to change.

The Problem Most People Over 50 Face in Stamford (But Don’t Realize It Yet) 🤔

A lot of people in our community are just like Nancy.

They’re not couch potatoes. They’re still moving, still living life.

But then something happens—

❌ A hike that feels WAY harder than it used to.
❌ Struggling up the stairs.
❌ Feeling exhausted after a long day.
❌ Watching their grandkids run around and realizing they can’t keep up.

And that’s the sharp knife moment—the realization that their strength, energy, and endurance aren’t what they used to be.

The scary part? Most people don’t even notice until something forces them to.

That’s why we do what we do at Core Principles Personal Training.

Because getting older doesn’t mean you have to feel old.

The Big Myth About Strength Training (And What Actually Works) 🏋️‍♂️

When Nancy first reached out to us, she was nervous.

She thought:
😨 “I’m not a gym person.”
😕 “I have no idea where to start.”
🤷‍♀️ “Am I too far gone for this to work?”

Sound familiar?

The truth is, most people over 50 don’t need a complicated workout plan. They don’t need to spend hours in a gym. They don’t need to be super fit to get started.

All they need is:
✔ The right movements (simple, effective exercises that make everyday life easier).
✔ The right guidance (so they don’t feel lost or overwhelmed).
✔ Consistency (just two sessions per week can be life-changing).

At Core Principles, we focus on the essentials that give you the biggest bang for your buck:

✅ Squats – so you can get up and down easily.
✅ Hinges – to keep your back strong and pain-free.
✅ Pressing & Pulling – for strong arms, shoulders, and a firm grip.
✅ Core work – so you feel balanced, stable, and confident.

That’s it. No fluff. No gimmicks. Just real, effective training that works.

Nancy’s Transformation: How She Got Stronger (Without the Gym Intimidation) 🚀

Nancy didn’t need to become a bodybuilder. She didn’t need a complicated routine.

She needed simple, effective training that fit her life.

So she committed to two training sessions per week at Core Principles.

After just a few weeks…
💪 She felt stronger walking up the stairs.
💪 She had more energy throughout the day.
💪 She started feeling like herself again.

Fast forward to today? She’s not only keeping up with her kids—she’s beating them to the top of the trail.

Nancy is proof that it’s never too late to get stronger.

And if you’ve had your “dull knife moment”—that realization that you’re not as strong as you used to be—you can do something about it.
