In today’s world, it is easy to think that the way a woman should focus on their fitness and nutrition is different than the way a man should. Marketing can be very deceptive at times, there are even separate magazines dedicated to Men’s Health and Women’s Health. With social media and marketing having such a major influence on what we believe it’s not a surprise people believe this.
The question I was asked today was if fat loss and nutrition different for men and women.
For the most part, I would have to say no, that there is no difference in terms of weight-loss strategies for men and women.
However, if we are getting into the nitty and gritty details of nutrition and weight loss there are slight differences.
The basics, and what most people need to focus on are the same for both men and women, eat whole foods, eat slowly, eat until satisfied, not stuffed, and much more will have the same effect.
Things that may differ slightly for men and women is the amount of food they should consume, and if you are trying to regulate any of your hormones through nutrition or if you are pregnant and working on your nutrition to ensure a healthy baby.
I want to be clear than if you are trying to adjust your hormonal levels, or change your nutrient because you are pregnant or breast-feeding that is out of my scope here as Core Principles Nutrition Coach, and you should always follow the advice of your doctor or qualified professional such as a registered dietician.
Getting back to the original question while men and women to differ slightly physiologically the most important concepts are still the same. We must be consuming fewer calories than we are eating in order to lose weight.
If your goal is to simply lose weight and you are worried about how you will differ from the opposite sex and you don’t have the basics down you are starting at the wrong place.
That is the same as worrying about your kitchen cabinet knobs while the foundation of your house is about to fall apart or the roof is beginning to cave in You probably wouldn’t be too concerned about what the knobs look like and you would invest your time and money into fixing the foundation so the house doesn’t fall in.
