What If You Surprised Your Family with Strength?

Older woman smiling on a stationary bike thinking about her family, representing strength training and active aging for adults 50+ at Core Principles in Stamford, CT.

Let’s be real for a second:

You love your family.
You want to be present with them—not sitting on the sidelines, smiling through the exhaustion.

But when the house gets quiet—between visits, between holidays—it’s easy to let time pass without doing something for yourself.

I want to offer a different perspective:

What if this quiet season was the exact right time to prepare for the moments that matter most?

That’s exactly what one of our members, a woman in her 60s here in Stamford, decided to do.

Her daughter once said, lovingly but honestly:

“I wish you could do more with the grandkids, but I know it’s hard on your knees.”

It hit her.
Not because it was mean. But because it was true.

So she came in. Quietly. Twice a week. No big announcement.
We started building strength, slowly but intentionally.

Three months later, something big happened.
During a training session, she got down on the floor and—without thinking—got back up.

She looked around, eyes wide, and ran into Colleen’s office:

“Holy shit. Did you see what I just did?!”

Her body had caught up to what her heart always wanted.

That week, when her grandkids visited, she got down on the floor with them during story time.
Not only did they notice—they lit up.

She didn’t just surprise them.
She showed them what was possible.

Here’s what I know from working with nearly 1,000 people over the last 11 years:

Strength training after 50 isn’t just about “getting fit.”
It’s about building the capacity to keep living life the way you want to.

✅ Saying yes to a hike on a whim
✅ Sitting on the floor at a birthday party without worrying how you’ll get up
✅ Exploring the Bronx Zoo or walking downtown without needing to rest halfway through
✅ Feeling steady on a ladder, in the garden, or while walking the dog after dark

And yes, it’s also about protecting your future.

As Dr. Peter Attia points out:

“The biggest predictor of how well you’ll live in your 80s is what you do in your 50s and 60s.”

But fear rarely fuels action.
Hope does.

So let’s make this about what you want more of.
More time. More energy. More “yes” moments.

Here’s where we start:

At Core Principles, we focus on the movements that matter most:

  • Sit-to-Stand Drills – So you can get up and down with ease

  • Farmer Carries – So groceries and grandkids don’t feel like a challenge

  • Balance Work – So you feel steady and safe, everywhere you go

  • Gentle Strength Circuits – So your stamina carries you through the whole day, not just the morning

You don’t have to train hard.
You just need to train smart—with a team that gets it.

We’ll meet you where you are, and help you build from there.

This season isn’t a pause.
It’s a chance to prepare.
For your family.
For your future.
For yourself.

Let’s make the next visit something they’ll never forget.
