How One Stamford Man Got Stronger at 71 Than He Was at 55 – And What You Can Learn From Him

If you’re over 50 and starting to feel like your body isn’t keeping up the way it used to, you’re not alone – and you’re not stuck.

Meet Sal.

He’s a local business owner here in Stamford. Grandfather. Golfer. Electrician. And now – at 71 – stronger, more energetic, and more active than he was at 55.

A few years ago, things looked very different.

It all started on the beach

On a Jersey Shore vacation with his family, Sal had what he calls his “wake‑up moment.”

  • Standing ankle‑deep in the water, he felt unstable
  • He couldn’t run after his grandkids like he used to
  • Sitting in the sand hurt his back
  • His golf drives were getting shorter every year
  • His shoulders were cranky and his hands stiff and painful

He knew exactly where this trend was heading: toward a smaller, more limited life.

Sal wasn’t ready for that.

He’d done some boxing years ago, lifted with a buddy for a bit. But like many of us, he fell out of the routine. Work. Life. Time.

On that beach day, scrolling Facebook, he saw one of our posts about strength after 50. He put his info in. A little later I called him back while sitting in the CVS parking lot on High Ridge.

He said:

“If this trend continues, I’m going to be in real trouble soon.”

That was August 2019.

Fast forward to today

Now, Sal has completed over 500 strength sessions at Core Principles.

He’s:

  • Stronger than he was at 55
  • Still running his electrical business full‑time
  • Playing hard with his grandkids again
  • Hitting the golf ball farther than he has in years
  • Dealing with far fewer nagging aches and pains

Life still happens – but he keeps going

Since starting, Sal has faced:

  • Illness
  • Family stress
  • Vacations
  • Work‑related injuries
  • COVID

None of those derailed him for long. He adjusted, adapted, and kept showing up.

My favorite moment?

In the middle of a session he suddenly blurted out:

“Ahhh shit!”

My coach Emily asked, “What’s wrong?”

He laughed and said:

“I just realized I have to do this for the rest of my life.”

We all cracked up. But he was right.

What people like Sal do differently (that you can copy)

Sal isn’t superhuman. He didn’t start with perfect fitness. But he did a few key things that made all the difference.

Physically: how he trained

  • Started small & simple – Just 2 short sessions a week to build the habit
  • Focused on movement quality over intensity – Built confidence before worrying about heavy weights
  • Trained at the right level – Exercises that fit his body
  • Worked around aches & pains – Modified movements so they were pain‑free
  • Stuck to fundamental movements – Squats, hinges, pushes, pulls, carries
  • Strengthened the basics first – Standing from a chair, getting off the floor, carrying things
  • Listened to his body (without quitting over every twinge) – Soreness vs. real pain
  • Showed up like it was an appointment – On the calendar, like any other responsibility
  • Trained in a coached environment – Didn’t guess alone

Mentally: how he thought

  • Focused on what he could control – Let go of the “lost” years
  • Accepted discomfort at first – New things feel awkward, that’s normal
  • Reframed his fears – “What if I get stronger and hurt less?”
  • Redefined success – Feeling better, not lifting the most
  • Stopped comparing to his 30‑year‑old self – Worked from where he was
  • Embraced progress over perfection – One missed session didn’t mean failure
  • Adopted a new identity – “I’m someone who takes care of my body now”

You could be the next Sal

If you’re local to Stamford and this sounds familiar – aching joints, feeling unsteady, frustrated your body isn’t keeping up – it’s not too late.

The hardest part is deciding to start. After that, your environment and structure should do 80% of the heavy lifting.

If you want help with that, that’s exactly what our small studio is built around.

P.S. If you’d like to “test drive” this for yourself the way Sal did, our April 21‑Day Birthday Strong Start – Strength Kickstart is your best first step.

  • 21 days
  • 6 coached sessions (2 private 1:1 Foundation sessions + 4 small‑group sessions)
  • For adults 50+ who want to feel stronger, steadier, and more confident

It’s $249 for the full 21 days, and if you complete all 6 sessions and decide to continue, we’ll credit $200 toward your first 4 weeks of membership.

We’re only opening 5 Birthday Strong Start spots for April. If you’re thinking “that sounds like me,” don’t wait – send us a note with BIRTHDAY and we’ll send details.

Spread the love!
