Am I Too Old to Start Strength Training? (Honest Questions From Your Stamford Neighbors)

Last week, one of our longtime Core Principles members, Pat, shared something very real with me after a session. She leaned in and said:

You know, Haylin, when I first walked in here, I honestly thought, ‘Am I too old for this? Maybe it’s already too late for me.’

Have you ever thought something like that?

If you have, you’re not alone. I’ve had this exact conversation with dozens of women around Stamford – at Turning Point Coffee, on the sidelines at soccer games, or just walking around Cove Island Park.

The questions usually sound like:

  • “I have no idea where to begin – I’m worried I’ll just embarrass myself.”
  • “Will strength training actually help, or am I just setting myself up for more aches and pains?”
  • “Is there anyone in Stamford patient and kind enough to understand someone my age and my knees/hips/back?”

These questions come up all the time. You’re not behind. You’re human.

The honest truth

I’m biased, but I’ll say it plainly:

Nothing – not dieting, medication, or random lifestyle tricks – has a bigger positive impact on your quality of life as you age than smart strength training.

I’ve seen it firsthand in our own neighborhood:

  • Neighbors hiking again at Mianus River Park
  • Grandparents picking up grandkids at Scalzi Park with confidence
  • Women waking up with less stiffness and more “I can handle today”

Why it still feels scary

Let’s be real: even when you know strength matters, starting still feels intimidating.

Maybe you:

  • Had a bad experience in a big gym years ago
  • Tried something once and ended up too sore to walk
  • Feel like everyone else already knows what they’re doing
  • Worry your body is “too far gone” or “too complicated” (old injuries, replacements, etc.)

So here’s a different way to look at it:

Your first step doesn’t have to be exercise.

Your first step is just admitting what’s holding you back.

Once you can say, “I’m scared of making something worse,” or “I’m afraid I’ll be the weakest one there,” you’ve already taken a real step.

Because now there’s something we can actually work with.

What helped Pat (and many others) move forward.

With Pat, the turning point wasn’t her first squat or her first dumbbell.

It was:

  • Saying out loud that she was scared
  • Letting someone hear that without judgment
  • Having someone explain, step by step, what her first few weeks would actually look like

From there, we could:

  • Choose movements that respected her knees and back
  • Go slow enough that she left each session feeling capable, not crushed
  • Build in enough support that she felt welcome, not out of place

Over time, she transitioned from nervous and unsure to:

  • Stronger
  • More confident
  • Proud of herself again

A simple reflection you can do today.

Take a minute and quietly answer these three questions:

  1. What’s my biggest fear about starting strength training?
  2. What’s one everyday thing I’d love to find easier in the next 3–6 months? (stairs, getting off the floor, travel, grandkids, etc.)
  3. If I knew I wouldn’t be judged or pushed too hard, would I be willing to try?

Just putting words to those answers is more progress than you think.

If you’d like to share them, you can always email me privately. I see women in their 50s, 60s, and 70s walk through this every week.

You’re not the exception. You’re the rule.

P.S. If reading this makes you think, “I might actually be ready to try… if it’s structured and gentle,” our April 21‑Day Birthday Strong Start – Strength Kickstart is built for exactly that.

  • 21 days
  • 6 coached sessions (including 2 private 1:1 Foundation sessions)
  • Small‑group training with other adults 50+
  • Adjusted around your knees, hips, and back

It’s $249 for the full 21 days, and if you complete all 6 sessions and decide to continue, we’ll credit $200 toward your first 4 weeks of membership.

We only have 5 Birthday Strong Start spots in April. If you’re curious, send me an email with the word BIRTHDAY and I’ll send all the details so you can see if it feels right for you.
